Report

On January 31, 2022, the JPO and the Philippine Intellectual Property Office co-hosted an online follow-up seminar to the IP training held in Japan since 1996.

Approximately 160 IP personnel from the IPOPHL, private companies, law firms, and universities from the Philippines attended the seminar for JPO/IPR training course alumni.

Under the theme of "Human Resource Development in the IP Field," JPO staff, IPOPHL staff, and persons in charge from universities and private companies in both the Philippines and Japan gave lectures on their respective organizations' efforts to develop IP human resources, focusing on IP culture development and IP in the workplace.

In the lectures from the Philippines side, IPOPHL staff introduced the training and human resource development conducted at the "IP Academy", which was established by IPOPHL in 2019. In addition, a Philippines university representative explained that human resource development efforts at her university have led to systematic technology transfer and to IP management.

In addition, a representative from an e-commerce company in the Philippines introduced IP protection efforts in e-commerce, which expanded due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Specifically, he explained that they will strengthen cooperation with IP rights holders, government agencies, and others by adding IP compliance efforts, including anti-counterfeiting measures, to the e-commerce company’s own governance. Through these efforts, it is expected that the IP environment in the Philippines will be further improved.

The Japanese side introduced in the lecture the recent efforts of the JPO, the efforts of the National Institute of Industrial Property Information and Training (INPIT) to develop for human resource for patent office examiners, persons in charge of intellectual property in private companies, and the general public. In addition, the persons in charge from an university in Japan introduced intellectual property education methods at universities, raising awareness of invention discovery, as well as the persons in charge from a private company intellectual property human resource development in his company.

This seminar is also introduced in ENISHI No.30 Chapter 5. Please take a look if you are interested. (ENISHI-IP Friends Connection)

In addition, on February 22, 2022, JPO held an opinion exchange meeting with alumni, asking for their opinions and experiences to serve as feedback for the training, as well as the initiatives they were involved with after the training, and how the training helped them. This allowed us to collect useful information that will be useful in planning our project.

Through these initiatives, the JPO will contribute toward continuous, self-sustaining development and improvement of the IP environment in the Philippines.
